Ikebana - the Japanese Art of Flower Arranging

Sometimes called zen with flowers…

Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arranging.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to make a Basic Upright Style Ikebana flower arrangement.   After learning just a few rules, participants will be able to make a beautiful arrangement in a ceramic container to take home. Participants will also receive instructions to follow for making more arrangements at home along with some additional flowers.

As the workshop is a small group format, there will be plenty of opportunities for feedback and for learning the basics.  Participants can expect a warm, welcoming, and easy-going environment. The workshop will be seated, with time set aside for questions and discussion and to photograph Ikebana arrangements.

No previous experience needed! “Ikebana can be made anywhere, anytime, by anyone, with any material” (quote by Sofu Teshigahara, first Iemoto of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana).

About your facilitator:

Claire McCaughey is a certified instructor of Ikebana in the Ottawa branch of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana (Tokyo). She has been teaching Ikebana since 2018, leading workshops for the public at the Canadian Museum of Nature as well as classes and workshops.  She has also shown her Ikebana arrangements at exhibitions at the Embassy of Japan in Canada and the Canadian Museum of Nature.  Claire was drawn to Ikebana because of its connection with both nature and art as well as the fact that it is a meditative, slow-paced creative activity.

Space limited to 7 participants.
