Do you want to start creative writing, but don’t know how to find ideas? Do you already write, and want some fun ways to move past blocks and get unstuck? Join us for this super fun, yet practical, creative writing workshop!
In a small group, we will use the tools of improv theatre to generate ideas, let go of perfectionism, and get writing. An experienced facilitator will lead you through simple improv exercises that explore word associations, characters, basic story structure and world-building.
Participants can expect a welcoming, easy-going environment. Most exercises will be done seated and practiced verbally, with a chance to debrief and write in between. Some exercises may offer the option for light movement, because sometimes, if we can’t move our minds, we can find inspiration in moving our bodies.
Absolutely no theatre or improv experience needed! Come prepared to try something new and laugh with a group of cool people having fun :)
About your Leader:
Krystal Merrells is a local improviser, actor, writer, and director. She has been practising and performing improv theatre since 2014 and teaching with the Improv Embassy since 2017. Krystal regularly performs narrative-based improv shows with Wayward Improvised Theatre, including the previous Filmed Before a Live Studio Audience (90s sitcom) and Red Tape (office comedy). She is currently performing in Wanderlust, a road trip dramedy. Krystal also co-directed the 2025 Ottawa Improv Festival and had her film directorial debut last December with the short We See You, which she co-wrote with the actors using improv!
