But isn’t paper already a sustainable choice?
As more companies move away from plastics, demand for paper has soared, placing increasing pressure on forests. Over three billion trees are cut down each year to produce paper and packaging, often from the world’s most biodiverse and climate-critical forests. A Love Letter is committed to doing its part by offering recycled and next-generation paper products wherever possible.
Recycled is best: Choosing recycled paper gives old paper a second life without cutting down new trees. But remember —recyclable isn’t the same as recycled. All paper is recyclable if it’s not contaminated, but only paper made with recycled content helps close the loop and ease the pressure on forests.
What are next generation products?
Paper doesn’t have to come from trees. Materials like wheat or flax straw, usually burned after harvest, and textile waste that would otherwise be landfilled, can be turned into stunning paper. These materials help divert waste and lower emissions. Globally, they need private, public, and consumer support to scale.
What is FSC certification?
When new forest fibre is used, FSC is the leading certification for environmental and social responsibility. You’ll see the FSC label when a product comes from responsibly managed forests. But there are different grades:
BEST — FSC Recycled made with 100% recycled fibre
SECOND BEST —FSC 100%: made entirely from FSC-certified virgin material
THIRD BEST —FSC Mix: a blend of FSC virgin fibre, recycled content, and “controlled wood” (meaning non-certified sources that are screened through a risk-based approach to avoid material originating from unacceptable sources). Look for high recycled content percentages on the label to minimize the risks of non-certified sources in FSC Mix.
Would you like a bag or a printed receipt?
We’re mindful about using less where we can and reducing our paper waste as another way we honour and protect the forests that inspire us. We also choose more timeless, quality products over passing trends.
